Vermont has QB options

The tone in Charlie Burnett's voice made this much clear: He was tired of answering questions about Max Librizzi.

Librizzi, who threw 45 touchdown passes in his senior year at Essex High School, will continue his football career at Holy Cross and will not play QB for Vermont in this summer's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl.

Librizzi's final high school game was one of his best. He completed 29 of 46 passes for 446 yards and six touchdowns (three interceptions) to lead the North to a 61-39 victory in Vermont's North-South All-Star Game last November.

"We'd love to have him, but we're real excited about the kids we have," Burnett said earlier this week.

Vermont has plenty of firepower

Roger Brown
nhfootballreport.com

Although Essex High School's Max Librizzi, who is widely considered to be Vermont's top quarterback, won't play in this year's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, Vermont still has plenty of offensive talent on its roster.

Here are some of the players that will line up against New Hampshire in this year's contest, which will be played Aug. 7 at Windsor (Vt.) High School:

Greg Gonyea
Tackle (6-3, 225 pounds)
Rutland

Gonyea started on both sides of the ball, and will be one of Vermont's top linemen. Made huge strides from his junior year to his senior season.

Kevin Jenko
TE/WR/DB (6-2, 201 pounds)
Essex

Jenko, a two-year starter, made 55 catches for 731 yards and eight touchdowns last season to help Essex win the Division I title. He was the team's only two-way starter and made five interceptions as a defensive back.

Rick Lantman
Wide Receiver (5-8, 140 pounds)
Rutland

Lantman made 69 catches for 1,161 yards and five touchdowns during his senior season to help Rutland reach the Division I championship game. A two-year starter at Rutland, Lantman is also a dangerous kick returner.

Evan McCrea
Wide Receiver (6-1, 190 pounds)
Essex

McCrea may have been the most versatile offensive player in Vermont last season. He returned 19 punts for 389 yards and 13 kickoffs for 262 yards. Offensively, he gained 400 yards on 36 carries and made 40 catches for 426 yards.

Pat Nee
Wide Receiver (6-3, 180 pounds)
Essex

Nee set a school record by catching 15 touchdown passes during his senior season. Nee, one of eight Essex players on the Vermont roster, made 52 catches for 941 yards last season.

James Nolan
Guard (5-7, 195 pounds)
Windsor

Nolan rushed for more than 1,000 yards from his fullback position during his junior year, but switched positions to fill a need in the offensive line last season. He was a three-year starter for Windsor.

Avery Normyle
Guard (5-11, 225)
Mount Anthony

Normyle, a three-year starter, played on both the offensive and defensive lines. He helped lead the Patriots to the Division I playoffs.

Ian Shaw
Running Back (5-10, 175)
Mount Mansfield

Shaw rushed for 1,538 yards -- he averaged 8.4 yards per carry -- and scored 16 touchdowns last season, when Mount Mansfield qualified for the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

New Hampshire won't face Librizzi in Shrine Game

Roger Brown
nhfootballreport.com

New Hampshire coach Ken Sciacca made it clear that many of the selections he made for this year's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl were based on the possibility that Essex High School's Max Librizzi would be Vermont's starting quarterback, so no one was more surprised than Sciacca to learn that Librizzi wasn't on the Vermont roster.

Librizzi completed 232 of 369 passes for 3,335 yards and 45 touchdowns for Essex last season. He'll join the Holy Cross football program next season.

"We took 12 (defensive backs) because of him," Sciacca said. "We really focused on defensive backs and a pass rush. I heard he was a real good quarterback."

Sciacca, who resigned as Kennett's head coach following the 2009 season, was scheduled to meet with his team for the first time Sunday.

"We only lost one (player) from our initial selections," Sciacca said. "Hopefully we can keep the crew we have.

"We have some outstanding running backs. We're real big in the backfield. We tried to select many of our offensive linemen from the lower divisions. That's worked pretty well when I've coached this game in the past."

New Hampshire will run a Wing-T offense in this year's game. The running backs on this year's roster include Kevin Brady (Inter-Lakes), Michael Cavanaugh (Manchester Central), Derek Furey (Timberlane) and Steven Jellison (Souhegan).

Practice for this year's game will begin on July 29. Both New Hampshire and Vermont will practice at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden. This year's game will be played Aug. 7 at Windsor (Vt.) High School. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

New Hampshire stretched its winning streak to nine games by posting a 40-6 victory over Vermont last summer. New Hampshire leads the all-time series 41-13-2.

"We tried to get the best kids we could," Sciacca said.

UNH got someone who knows how to catch the football, and someone who is used to postseason success.

Giansante (pictured), a 6-foot-2 wide receiver who played for Thomas Jefferson High School in Clairton, Pa., caught 53 passes for 1,234 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He was a three-year starter for Thomas Jefferson, which had a 42-2 record (16-1 in the playoffs) during those three seasons. Thomas Jefferson won WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA championships in 2007 and 2008.

Giansante didn't appear on UNH's list on incoming recruits that was released on national signing day because he didn't commit to UNH until Feb. 5, the first Friday that followed signing day.

"They like to pass the ball a lot," Giansante told the McKeesport Daily News. "So that makes me happy."

Giansante reportedly had scholarship offers from William & Mary, VMI and Bowling Green. He visited UNH on Jan. 23.
