Johnson confirms decision to leave BG

Bishop Guertin logo.pngFormer Bishop Guertin football coach Tony Johnson confirmed Sunday that he will be the next football coach at Worcester Academy.

"I told BG I wouldn't say anything until they put out a release, but I can confirm that I have accepted the Worcester Academy job," Johnson said.

Johnson, who is BG's athletic director, will replace David Dykeman, who left Worcester Academy to become the head coach at Cheshire (Conn.) Academy.

Johnson will also be an assistant track and field coach at Worcester Academy. He said he will also have other administrative duties.

Johnson stepped down as BG's head coach last June, several months after guiding the Cardinals to their third consecutive Division II championship. BG won six Division II titles in Johnson's final seven years as the program's head coach..

Johnson took over as BG's head coach in 1994. Former Manchester West coach Travis Cote was hired as Johnson's replacement last year and guided the Cardinals to another Division II championship.

Johnson coached outside linebackers at St. Anselm College last season.
