Monday Mailbag: Playoff picks, please

NHFR logo.jpgEach Monday New Hampshire Football Report's Roger Brown answers your questions:

Q: Roger, considering both BG and Keene lost in Week 1, what are your playoff picks for D2? -- Owl Watcher, Plaistow

A: First let's remember that both BG and Keene lost non-league games that won't count in the Division II standings. Both losses also came against Division I opponents: BG to Pinkerton Academy and Keene to Salem.

It looks like Keene may have avoided a major setback since X-rays on running back Jimmy Boulay's injured knee showed no major damage. Boulay, who was injured early in the second half of the Salem loss, will likely miss this weekend's game against Alvirne and will then get an extra week of rest since Keene has a bye the following week.

Assuming Boulay returns to something near 100 percent, it's probably safe to pencil in BG and Keene as playoff teams. There's no doubt BG could handle a Division I schedule. There's not much to go on at this point, but the other playoff spots will probably be filled by two of the following three teams: Dover, Timberlane and Winnacunnet.

Q: in your opinion, which team had the most impressive win over the weekend? Pinkerton? -- Jim Muse, Conway.

A: The two scores that really stood out to me were Hollis-Brookline's 27-19 victory over Manchester Memorial, and Milford's 13-6 triumph over Londonderry. In both cases it was a Division III team beating a Division I opponents. Probably have to give the slight edge to Hollis-Brookline.

Q: Is the point-rating system back in place? I know they got rid of it at the end of last year, but I think it was instituted for the two-year cycle. Haven't read anything about it. -- Mitch, Manchester.

A: No, the New Hampshire Index Plan was buried [thankfully] midway through last season. This season records against league opponents will be used to select the playoff field and to detemine seedings in each division. Head-to-head result is the first tiebreaker.
