UNH logo.jpgRICHMOND, Va. - University of New Hampshire sophomore linebacker Matt Evans was named the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, marking the second straight week a Wildcat football player has been honored as the league's top defensive performer.

Evans returned a fumble for a touchdown, forced a fumble and racked up a game-high 14 tackles in the 15th-ranked Wildcats' 28-14 upset victory at No. 6 James Madison University on Saturday.

Evans, the CAA's leader with 80 tackles, scored the game's first points when he picked up a fumble from Dukes quarterback Drew Dudzik and raced it back 17 yards for a touchdown with 12:04 remaining in the opening quarter. Evans' 14 tackles, including eight solo stops, matched a career high, and the 6-foot, 219-pound middle linebacker also collected a sack as part of his 2.5 tackles for loss. Evans has reached double-digit tackles in five consecutive games and six of New Hampshire's seven games this season.

UNH safety John Greer was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 11 after notching two interceptions in the Wildcats' 17-0 shutout of then-11th-ranked Richmond at Cowell Stadium.

UNH (4-3, 2-2 CAA) seeks its third straight triumph over a higher-ranked opponent when it takes on rival Massachusetts (4-2, 2-1) in the inaugural Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
