Nickel Package: Maybe Dover's the team to beat
Five items on the New Hampshire football landscape:
1. Dover Green Wave.
Dover has won three in a row since an 0-3 start and none of those victories was more impressive than Saturday night's 7-0 triumph over Bishop Guertin.
Dover held BG quarterback Steve Cuipa to 48 yards rushing and 70 yards through the air (8 of 17). It was the first time BG has been shut out at Stellos Stadium.
Dover, which returned eight defensive starters from its 2009 team, hasn't allowed a point in its last three games. A home game for the Division II semifinals is very much within reach.
2. Peter LaBreck
Plymouth State coach Paul Castonia moved LaBreck from the offensive line to the defensive line last week because of injuries, and the move paid off when LaBreck forced a fumble, collected the loose ball, and ran 48 yards for a touchdown in Plymouth State's 21-7 triumph over MIT on Saturday.
LaBreck finished the contest with a game-high nine tackles.
3. Surprising scores.
Dover's 7-0 victory over BG wasn't the only stunner last weekend. Here are four other games that must have had people wondering if the score had been reported incorrectly:
Gilford 40, Newfound 7
Winnisquam 27, Newport 14
Milford 28, Bedford 7
Monadnock 34, Kennett 7
4. Unbeaten and untied.
The number of unbeaten high school teams in the state shrunk to six last weekend. That list features Winnacunnet (Division II), Keene (Division II), Lebanon (Divison IV), Trinity (Division IV), St. Thomas (Division V) and Kearsarge (Division V).
5. Dartmouth recruit.
Dartmouth offered admission (the Ivy League equivalent of a scholarship) to Loomis Chaffee running back/defensive back Chai Reece on Saturday. Reece played at Loyola (Calif.) High School before deciding on a post-graduate year at Loomis Chaffee, which dropped to 2-1 following Saturday's 33-12 loss to Phillips Exeter (3-0).
Reece, who is being recruited as a defensive back, has five interceptions in three games this season.
