Nickel Package: And the best team in the state is ...

nickel package.gifFive items on the New Hampshire football landscape:

1. It's good to be 3-0

When the season started pretty much everyone assumed Bishop Guertin and Winnacunnet would reach the Division II championship game. Those opinions may not have changed, but Merrimack and Keene are at least giving people something to think about.

The Tomahawks improved their record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Division II by beating Alvirne 28-13 on Friday. Merrimack has also beaten Dover and Division III Hollis-Brookline. It hasn't been a murderous schedule, but it is the program's first 3-0 start since 1995.

The Tomahawks will get their toughest test to date when they face BG in Merrimack on Friday night.

Keene is also off to a 3-0 start. The Blackbirds own victories over Division III Con-Val, Alvirne and and a winless Brattleboro (Vt.) team. Manchester West and Spaulding are the next two teams on Keene's schedule, so the Blackbirds will likely be 5-0 entering their Oct. 8 game at Merrimack.

2. The dandy Dozen

The number of unbeaten high school teams in the state shrunk to 12 last weekend. The unbeatens: Bishop Guertin, Keene, Merrimack, Winnacunnet, Bedford, Souhegan, Lebanon, Trinity, Kearsarge, St. Thomas, Franklin and Newport.

3. Running Man

The Workhorse of the Week Award goes to Londonderry's Sean O'Gorman, who carried the ball 35 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns in his team's 20-7 triumph over Exeter on Saturday night. O'Gorman carried the ball on 14 of Londonderry's first 17 plays.

4. Bobcat tale

A month ago it was hard to envision Plymouth losing a game this season. Now it's very possible that the Bobcats could lose in back-to-back weeks.

Plymouth entered the weekend with a 57-game winning streak, which was the longest active winning streak in the country. Kennett ended that streak by scoring 20 unanswered points in its 20-9 victory last Friday night.

Plymouth may face an even tougher opponent Friday night, when it meets unbeaten Trinity in Manchester. The Pioneers went unbeaten en route to the Division V championship last year, and moved up to Division IV this season. The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 97-36 in their three games.

5. High Fives

The top five teams in Divisions I, II and III: 1) Winnacunnet, 2) Bishop Guertin, 3) Nashua North, 4) Salem and 5) Pinkerton Academy.

The top five teams in Divisions IV, V and VI: 1) Trinity, 2) Lebanon, 3) St. Thomas, 4) Kennett and 5) Plymouth.
