Portsmouth High School's Mike Montville has decided not to play in next month's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl because of an arm injury.
Montville, a wide receiver/defensive back who earned a baseball scholarship from the University of Maryland, said he was concerned about his ability to tackle in the game and wanted to be 100 percent healthy for the upcoming college baseball season.
New Hampshire will face Vermont in the all-star football game on Aug. 7 at Windsor (Vt.) High School. Practice for both New Hampshire and Vermont will begin July 29 at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden.
Manchester Central's Lquan Desir has replaced Montville on the New Hampshire roster.
Montville was Portsmouth's leading receiver in his junior and senior seasons. He caught 60 passes for 1,182 yards last season, including 12 receptions for 207 yards when Portsmouth lost to Souhegan in the Division III championship game.
He also helped Portsmouth win the last three Class I baseball championships.
New Hampshire stretched its winning streak to nine games by posting a 40-6 victory over Vermont last summer. New Hampshire leads the all-time series 41-13-2.
