Yukica Chapter announces Scholar-Athlete winners
The Joe Yukica/New Hampshire Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame has released the names of the 29 seniors who are the recipients of this year's Scholar-Athlete Awards. The students will receive their awards at the foundation's 23rd annual dinner on May 4 in Manchester.
The winners represent 16 different high school. Bishop Guertin led the way with five student-athletes who were selected. Souhegan had four players selected, and Portsmouth had three.
Thirteen of the 29 players will represent New Hampshire in this summer's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl.
The May 4 dinner will be named in honor of former UNH football coach Clarence "Chief" Boston. New Hampshire Governor John Lynch will receive the New Hampshire Chapter's "Distinguished American Award."
The Andy Mooradian Award, which is given for contribution to football, will be presented to former Manchester Central head coach Jim Schubert. Don York of Indian Head Athletics in Manchester will be presented the Red Hayes Award in recognition of the support his business gives to youth athletic programs.
The dinner will be held at the Executive Court Banquet facilities in Manchester. Tickets are available by calling 669-7070.
