Husband supports six divisions

Note: The following commentary was submitted by Franklin High School football coach Greg Husband. This topic can be discussed on the New Hampshire Football Report message board.

Kudos to the NHIAA for creating and maintaining six divisions in the State of New Hampshire. Their decision has enabled small-town football to flourish in the state. When I first started coaching, there were approximately one-half of the teams playing in the state and only three divisions. Thanks to their stewardship, the number of communities participating has doubled.

Some individuals like to compare New Hampshire to Texas. It's not a great comparison. Did you know that 240 schools were eligible at the end of the season to participate in the playoffs in Texas? Did you know that at least one school in each division had a losing record in the playoffs? Did you know that many were either 500 or close to 500 for their winning percentage?

I don't think New Hampshire wants to see three divisions with 48 teams making the playoffs. How many would have losing records? We are not Texas. Why would you want to watch blowout playoff games? Look how successful the crossover games have been in two years: one division VI team has won a game in two years. This year Division II was successful against Division I, but it wasn't last year. Have you considered if we play four playoff games, we will be into December? Again, Texas weather is a little different than NewHampshire's.

This weekend I intend to watch Winnisquam play Inter-Lakes for the Division VI state championship. Both teams had excellent years, Inter-Lakes is 10-0 in Division VI (10-1 overall), Winnisquam is 9-1 in Division VI (10-1) overall. One of these small schools deserves to be crowned state champion. They both have earned the right to play for the title. I wish them both the best and I look forward to watching a very exciting football game.
