There were those who said Friday night's game against Catholic Memorial would be Bishop Guertin's toughest game of the season. It turned out to be one of BG's most lopsided games of the season.
Even though quarterback Steve Cuipa did not play in the second half (rib injury), BG gashed the Catholic Memorial defense for seven touchdowns in its 52-13 triumph.
The Cardinals, who improved their record to 7-0 overall, led 17-0 after one quarter, 24-7 at halftime and 38-13 after three quarters.
Catholic Memorial entered the contest with a 4-0 record.
"This is a great statement for Bishop Guertin football," BG coach Tony Johnson said. "This is a great statement for New Hampshire football."
Senior running back Adam Hall rushed for 183 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns. BG also received two 1-yard TD runs from backup QB Christopher Kujawski, who triggered running time when he scored his second touchdown with 5:31 to play.
The BG defense didn't allow a point. Catholic Memorial scored both of its touchdowns on Donovan Henry kickoff returns (82 and 86 yards). It was the first time the Cardinals have allowed more than seven points in a game this season.
"We had a heck of a time getting (our defense) off the field," Catholic Memorial coach Alex Campea said. "They're a very good football team. They execute well."
BG's other touchdowns came on Cuipa's 2-yard run in the first quarter, and Mike Kelly's 80-yard reception from Cuipa. BG also received a 30-yard field goal from Ryan Card.
BG has scored at least 50 points in three of its games this season. The Cardinals have outscored their seven opponents 311-25.
Johnson said he's hoping to schedule a game against Catholic Memorial next season, but added that he will have to alter BG's Division II schedule to do so.
"They're the best team we've seen thus far," Campea said. "No doubt about it. They were certainly better than us tonight."
