Although the University of Massachusetts named a new head coach Monday, Laconia High School's Christian Birt plans to honor his commitment to the Minutemen, according to Laconia head coach Craig Kozens.
"He's content and happy with his UMass decision," Kozens said Monday night. "The level of football didn't matter. He just wanted to stay local."
Ohio University, Central Michigan and Boston College were among the schools that showed an interest in Birt, a running back/defensive back who helped Laconia reach the Division IV championship game last fall. Birt rushed for 1,171 yards as a senior. He also scored 24 touchdowns, 19 of which came on the ground.
Don Brown recruited Birt, but Brown resigned as the head coach at UMass to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Maryland earlier this month. Kevin Morris was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach.
"He could have gone to another school, but I think UMass will be a good place for him," Kozens said.
